KEYS AWARDS WATER 2025 CHALLENGE GRANTS TO LOCAL WATER ENTITIES

The Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation, John W. Keys, presented three Utah water entities with Water 2025 Challenge Grant Awards today to assist in addressing long-term water needs along Utah's Wasatch Front and Emery Valley.

The awards, which were presented in a brief ceremony near Reclamation's Provo Area Office, provided initial funding for the creation of three water saving projects. Ceremony participants included representatives from the Provo River Water Users Association, Springville Irrigation District and the Emery County Water Conservancy District.

"These entities have all shown initiative in the development of water saving technologies," said Commissioner Keys. "Reclamation is very pleased to contribute to this kind of grass roots innovation in the service of addressing the water issues of the West."

Provo River's Bear Creek Diversion Structure and Weber-Provo Canal Improvements project promises to save more than 2,000 acre-feet of water annually. Springville Irrigation District's Lateral Replacement Project will save more than 400 acre-feet annually. And Emery County's Canal and Reservoir Automation project will save nearly 8,000 acre-feet annually.

Water 2025 Challenge Grants, administered by the Bureau of Reclamation, provide local irrigation districts throughout the West with matching funds to support a variety of projects to make more efficient use of existing water supplies through water conservation, efficiency and water market projects. The Challenge Grants program focuses on meeting the goals identified in Water 2025: Preventing Crises and Conflict in the West. In late June, Interior Secretary Gale Norton approved more than $4 million dollars in water conservation grants under the Water 2025 Secretarial Challenge Grant Program. President George Bush has requested $21 million for the initiative in Fiscal Year 2005.
